Greetings from a daffodil flowering Ireland

26 March’11

Good day to all, family and friends!
We experienced brilliant weather since Tuesday, blue skies, bright sunshine no wind with afternoon temperatures reaching 14-15 degrees until this morning when the promised cloud cover was blown in from the sea over most of the midlands. A dry day but the wind has a severe nip in it and in spite of the fact that we sat outside most days, drinking in the glorious sunshine with short sleeve shirts on-we had to haul out the cardigans and jackets once more!...it is not over yet!
We are surrounded with daffodils and I already picked a bunch of 20 yesterday and you cannot even see that I harvest so much!
Next to the road, as far as you drive, you are greeted with yellow bright flowers-planted years ago and every year the yield is better than before!
In great hope we went yesterday to our Garden Centre in Abbeylara, and again we were either to late or the flowers has not arrived and we left empty handed and drove on to Cavan where there is a Woodies and they have a good gardening section! The selection was somewhat better but not up to Barry’s standard. We did get new baskets and linings but still no flowers! The end of it is: no baskets in front of the house yet and except for the yellow of the daffodils no other colours in our garden. The wild plum trees are covered in blossoms and so are the fruit trees! Hope the fruit will be better this year than last year!
We stopped feeding the birds peanuts and that means that they have deserted us; our faithful little Red Robin who has been part of the garden for the last 6 years still sings his heart out if you enter his territory. The starlings got the fright of their lives in the new shed and departed speedily after their encounter with Barry! The Blue Tits who knows him well does not mind him and found their old nest of last year and started to line the same with everything soft! There are no new birds to be seen! Some 60 km away from us they heard the coo-coo calling, now very rare in Ireland.
Our visiting cats have been finicky with their selection of food! The grey tabby cat eats anything but the black cat pulled his nose up at the pork sausages! We do not eat pork sausages but it is part of the food I bring home from the hospital! Not because we do not like them, they are actually delicious BUT the fat contents are above all limits and therefore we abstain!
At the hospital things are moving – the ward on the 1st floor has been opened and all day cases are now admitted into that ward called Alverna and overnight cases stay in Assisi ward. This new CEO is on a collision course with the staff and he claims that there are too many staff on the wards, he does not understand the concept of patient: staff ratio and whenever he comes up to the ward he finds a staff member in the office which according to him is : overstaffed!! He would not listen to reason or try to understand. The nurses work extremely hard and are very loyal but he is busy rubbing them up the wrong way and you do not do that with an Irish Nurse! You are asking for trouble!
Being on night duty kind of protects us from his scrutiny at all hours but he promised that he will arrive unannounced!
I am missing church tomorrow as I have to attend a refreshers course in BLS Instruction! The whole concept of ABC is changing worldwide from 2nd of April!
The Irish does not have much respect for Sundays, they regard it as just an extra working day to finish what was not done during the week! I have to leave here at 6am to be at the hospital where a colleague will pick me up and together we will travel further inland to Klinnard! We have to register at 08h45 and be ready at 09h00 for a marathon session until 13h00! And back another 2 ½ hours!
On the political side a report was published by the “Moriarty” investigation regarding fraudulent transactions that took place between businessmen and then ministers in government14 years ago, about the purchasing and selling of a mobile phone licence! Many of the people discredited in the report sits now in ministerial posts in parliament! What a disaster! With the news that Portugal’s Government collapsed during the week and the Euro now in jeopardy the problem of the interest, the Irish have to pay on the money borrowed from the IMF is now pushed on another week! The new prime minister seems to make friends as far as he goes and we hope that it brings forth fruits in favour of our financial dilemma.
The war in the Middle East is terrible and the Poor Japanese people are really suffering tremendously! We are so privileged
to live such secure and safe lives! My heart goes out to them!
Thank you for the lovely letters received during the week, all news is greedily read and digested! The farm news is wonderful and I hope that the new driver will be as good as you expect him to be Hessie! How are the newly married couple in Melbourne doing? Has Nine Kruger found a job yet and we hope that when she does that it will be good and that she will be happy!
Haya, how are the future parents on your farm getting along!? Hope all is going well! Joy , I love to hear from you and hope that you are keeping well! Laurel, I have not heard from you in many a month! Hope you are all doing well! Nanette and Brandon, always so wonderful to hear from you Nanette and the lovely emails that arrive in my post box! Retha, what has happened to you! Miss you terribly! Sonja seems to have fallen of the earth!
Birthdays coming up are as follows:
Isabel, Happy birthday for the 28th! May you experience good health and great joy this coming year!
Anette from Mendel and Anke has her birthday on the 30th Paul could you convey our best wishes to your sister!
My new car drives like a dream much heavier in weight and secure on the road! Being a diesel we will now experience a different fuel consumption which might be very interesting!
Road tax a laugh at €104 per year instead of €475 for the petrol car! It also has a proper spare wheel and not a miniature racing driving-car replica, as was in the old car!
Any-one who possibly can, living in the Mullingar Longford region, please try and attend the Hymnal Service in honour of the wonderful blessing of the new organ! 10 April @ 3pm! Tea will be served afterwards Corboy Presbyterian Church!
This brings me to the end of this letter with my thoughts always with those who are not well, those who are going through difficult times and those who are recovering from illnesses! Nicholas we hope you will be soon a 100% and that the examinations of the 6th will be good! Marthie’s Mom who is recovering after her big operation and to those I do not know about! May it go well!
Be always careful and aware of your safety!
Love and warm regards from us in Cranleymore, surrounded by daffodils!

Lente groete uit Ierland!

19 Maart’11

Soos Gerlof se dit voel of ons al ‘n leeftyd hier is!
Liefde groete
Barry en Christina

Greetings from Ireland where it snows in Spring

12 March’11
Good day to all, family and friends,
Last week we were ecstatic because spring arrived, today we have to add the following ingredients to spring namely - S N O W!!!!!
It started snowing in Cranleymore at 3 minutes to 9am and is still going strong out there! It is cold, 1°* wet and different! Further up North it has been snowing the greater part of the night and I suppose Scotland is in it too! Wonder about the family in mid England and Exeter?
The daffodils are very brave standing there in the snow with their bright yellow clocks facing the south waiting for the sun!
We have been following the terrible disaster in Japan where the Earthquake and Tsunami brought havoc! I have a friend living in Shizuoka-ken , have not heard any bad news from there and we were very worried about Amanda visiting the Philippines recruiting nurses for their Nursing Homes in Manila. They got the all clear at about 1pm our time yesterday and we were very thankful!
In Ireland the new Government were sworn in on Wednesday and
We can only pray and hope that they will keep their word and be honest! Our new Prime minister, Taoiseach Ende Kenny has a great responsibility and to bring about a change in the economics of this country will take super perseverance and diligent work, cultivating a new species of bankers and financial advisers!
He will be visiting Barak Obama on the 17th, getting ready for a State visit from the Queen and talk us out of the IMF EU monitory deal by hook or by crook!
I have not been back to work as I had a week off, the duty just worked out that way and then I was notified that the hospital had no patients last night and that I will have to leave for last night! I still have accumulated leave from 2010 and it came in handy!
I will thou be working this weekend which means that Joy will have the honours of playing the new organ while I am fast asleep in my bed! Nearly jealous.................. but not really......!!!!
Finbarr and Lukas were due to visit but with the snow and the bad roads we decided rather to SKYPE tomorrow when I get up and enjoy the grandson from a distance! I have to admit it was strange for us, the role that the fathers play in this country, they are just as able as the mothers if not better! He is coping extremely well- pick Lukas up from the day mother Monica ,which has adopted Lukas as her own, after work, feed him enjoy time with and do all the things that a mother would ,He sleeps right through the night and in the morning the same thing- bathing, feeding, dressing and ready to go! Wonderful!
There is little other news and to keep on talking about nothing is not fun! Thank you to all who so wonderfully and regular write a letter or a note I do appreciate it very much! I also Skype’d with Trish in SA during the week so we are up to date with the news!
Birthdays- a day late and apologies was Nichola Joslings - hope that it was a great day!
Little piece of Afrikaans !
Back to English!
I do have to share some other exciting news!
We have been looking for a new car since the end of last year but because the emissions of my car are so high no-one want to buy it as it is not eco friendly BUT on Tuesday we found a garage that was prepared to give us s good price and we took the courageous step and bought a Diesel Renault Fluence! Then came the disappointing news that we have to wait 10 days for delivery This is Ireland and they only transport the cars when the carriage is full! Barry was furious but what can we do- wait - I suppose -patiently! The road tax on this car is €104, €371 less than for my present car! A Big difference! The price of diesel is reaching also super heights and we pay at present €1.46 a litre.
I was also very bold and bought a new printer, the ink cartridges of the old printer costs more that the printer. I now have a 4:1 scanner, photocopier, printer and photo printer. Without any assistance I also installed same and it is all working well!
No flowers in the baskets as there were just not good enough plants at the garden centre- the nurseries must have felt the severe winter as well- just as well with the snow falling outside it would have been a bit of a gamble!
I now greet you and wish you well! Be always careful and safety aware!
Barry and Christina, Cranleymore, where the snow is falling in SPRING!

Groete vanuit 'n wakker wordende Ierland

5 Maart’11

Welkom by die Grootouer klub!

Spring Greetings from Ireland

26 Feb’11

Good day to all, family and friends,
The sun shine, the skies are blue and spring is in the air!
There is a wind but that is part and parcel of living on an island that is a bit bigger than the Free State!
The birds are singing their hearts out and the daffodils have really moved at great speed during the last week and our 1st tulip will be open in about 2 days!
There is this expectation of great things to happen, the air is clean and we cannot wait for the burst of colour and flowers all around us! It has been a long and difficult winter and every bit of good weather is extremely welcome! Temperatures are rising and the days are wonderfully longer!!!!
It is COUNTING day in Ireland after the Election of the 31st Dóil ( parliament) of the Republic and we hope and pray that the outcome will be good. We are at the bottom of every aspect in financial and political turmoil thinkable and whatever the future brings, it has to be better!
I have been off sick with a most horrific Lower Respiratory Tract Infection caused according to me by an allergy- what the cause may be is still to be figured out!
I am a walking cortisone advert and after 10 days of intensive treatment there is some hope! I only cough now every 90 minutes for 15 minutes and not every 15 minutes for 90 minutes!!!! 2 different courses of antibiotic completed and every possible nebulizer circulated through the alveoli’s!
I was suppose to teach CPR at the hospital but my colleague had to cope all by herself – good experience for her but less in my pocket, we do get paid separately for this service we provide!
Not being at the hospital I have no idea what is happening there and believe that all is on tract!
Gerlof is boasting about his granddaughter but I have to admit that I feel exactly the same about our grandson, there has just not been another one like him!
He had his 1st haircut last weekend and received a certificate with a lock of hair attached! His Oupa was so upset, but his mother declared categorically that her son will not look like a ‘Knackers’ ( traveller) and therefore the hair needed to be trimmed!
He presents you with gums and no teeth at present and his parents fear that he will wake up one morning with a full set of teeth! He moves like lightning –crawling properly for the correct development and say about 20 words! He is just 10 months old! Ready to make life difficult for his surroundings! I personally think children are born more advanced as years ago!
March is approaching and our plans for the new garden layout are still on the books! To be able to achieve perfection we will have to have at least 2 loads of top soil delivered and then the compost worked through and the planting of all the different bi-annual and perennial plants as this will have to be a semi final attempt for our cottage! Wish us well! It will keep Barry busy for a while!
As we walk through the bottom field we came to realization that we do miss the geese terribly and maybe we will get a gander and 2 females...but that is still just talk it brings us back to not being able to leave when we want to and that is the main reason why we got rid of them! Never happy unless miserable!
We also had a very tension full week behind us. Sharon Barry’s niece living a bit longer than us here in Cork with her twin sons notified us on Monday about the severely ill Nicholas. The twins are just 15 + yrs old. He presented with a headache on Sunday evening and went to bed after taking 2 Paracetamols. Woke his mother up at about 2am and said the pain is unbearable! Between Drs and hospitals ? Meningitis diagnosed and when that was excluded test revealed an aneurism with brain haemorrhage- he was severely ill but thanks be to God the Neuro team did the necessary and he is after brain keyhole surgery on his way to recovery!
He is most probably one of the youngest people ever to have had a brain haemorrhage in Ireland. His twin will have to be investigated but we are so thankful that it all turned out satisfactory and although still in hospital is making good progress.
The other good news is: THE ORGAN WILL BE DELIVERED ON MONDAY MORNING!
We plan an inauguration Hymn singing service for early in April in thanksgiving to this wonderful purchase!
On top of that as you know by now tomorrow is the best day of my week and the wonderful expectation of food for the soul is a very comforting one! It will also be the last time I will have to take the keyboard to church! Hallelujah!
Birthdays! Laurel will be a year older tomorrow and Angie the 28th! Happy Birthday to both of you!
The troubles in the North of Africa are very disturbing and with petrol the price it is I wonder what the future holds!
We think of those families in Christchurch whom have been affected by the earth quake- I know that there are cousins living in New Zealand I am just not sure exactly where- we hope and pray that they are all well!
It brings me then to the end of my letter with thanks to all those who did make an effort to write a few lines and tell us about their daily living – I love hearing from you!
For some or other reason I was not able to open the wedding album from the Australian couple! What a pity!
Photos of the children are also most welcome and lovely!
Do take care and stay diligent with security!
Spring greetings from us in Cranleymore!

Groete vanuit 'n wakker wordende Ierland

19 Feb’11

Ek sien tog so uit daarna!
Liefde groete
Barry en Christina

Weather!!!!!
I have got a felling that somewhere the clockwork of nature has had a hiccup!!!!
Chicago is under the snow! Australia had the floods and now the Hurricane, South Africa had good rains and floods!
And off course we must not forget Ireland that can have all 4 seasons in one day!
Temperatures during the last week went up to 12-13, no sun thou but plenty , ooooo, plenty of wind! And rain as accompaniment! Storm-like winds, trees down, and a woman was killed by a freak accident when she walked along the pavement and a tree fell on her and killed her! This is a warm wind but not pleasant to be in!
The garden is transforming into yellow and purple crocuses and looks lovely! The daffodils and tulips are about 4” above the ground! The birds are singing in the trees and it is so beautiful, the robins, the thrushes, and the black birds it is like a symphony outside! Barry still supplements them with peanuts and oats! I will have to prune next week if it stops raining as all the rose trees are pushing out there little buds!
The severe cold killed 2 of my orchids they just became like jelly, the old one is so faithful and still have 6 flowers on since October it had 32 flowers on 3 stems!
The baskets will be dealt with early March!
On the political front the country experience voting fever as the Dail (parliament) was dissolved on Tuesday 1st.
We can only hope and pray that who-ever come into power that the corruption and enormous salaries will come to an end Our Prime Minister earned more than Barak Obama and his pension will be of great comfort to him for the rest of his life!
In the mean time we the working class are struggling to make ends meet since the new USC payment has come into effect! The first politician has called at the door and she can be glad I was asleep as she would have had a difficult time with me! Barry was very polite but put his point over with conviction!
At the hospital things are moving fast! Mr Mark Gordon, with his Northern accent seems to be a very able financier and the CT scanner as well as the MRI scanner will be installed next week!!!!! That is surely one of the greatest assets that the hospital will have as the nearest one is a good 50-75 km away!
The new Emergency Department is already being created with inner walls taken out and cubicles being installed- The admission ward is in progress and the future will bring a 125 bed Nursing home single rooms with en suite and all possible facilities for the elderly! To be finished in 4 years time!
The new theatres are being constructed and will be in use before July. The hospital being built in the early 60’s does not have piped Oxygen and that is being installed in the High care Units at present!
We still push O2 cylinders around to where they are needed!
They also caught me for a sucker again when they left me and a carer with 13 patients one night of which 3 came out of theatre after 7pm 8 medical cases of which 2 were confused and needed constant observation and to round the lot off a re-admission of an Autistic child who had a tonsillectomy and went home and never ate or drank anything, dehydrated and in a collapsed state we had to infuse this impossible child with fluids and IV antibiotics, I claim that pain management in a child is of the utmost importance but ......... we coped and that is my problem , we always cope till one night and then there will be no- one helping us in court if something goes wrong and we did not cope! I there-for have now an appointment with the new boss to discuss our problems at night and to show him my letter of concerns written last Oct and the managers answer to it as well as my report regarding the unsafe patients: nurse ratio at night!
I might have no job there-after but I feel I have to do it!
The AGM at church has agreed to the purchasing of an organ and now it is so exiting and we can’t wait for its arrival and installation! It is not big but a real church organ (digital) but with pipe organ sounds!. Tomorrow is as always the best day of my week and after a difficult week of work behind me I cannot wait for the soul food we receive from a very gifted preacher!
The children and Lukas were here last Sunday and that was also wonderful, the little man is too cute and has this little finger that inspects everything and picks up everything he lays his eyes on!
He has no problem with grey matter and has his parents running rings around him!
That brings me to the end of this week’s letter and hope that you are all well!
Thank you so much for all of you that send letters during the week it is always so lovely to read about you all! We are awaiting the link to the wedding photographs of Sam and Emma!
Watch every step you take, leave no place for carelessness and may it go well with you all!
Warm regards from us in Cranleymore!
Barry and Christina
