Greetings from Ireland

Sunday 27 Dec 2009

Good day all family and friends,
Last Sunday morning we were met with snow, it continued throughout the day, sometimes less severe but other times it really snowed!!!! Coming out of church the view of the high pine trees covered with snow was spectacular. I remembered that I had my mobile phone in m jacket pocket en turned around very carefully, as I have been the one who was warning the older people to be careful, took 2 photos and turned back my first step back to the car was fine but the next one I put my foot down on another ones footprint and in a split second I landed on my back. Fortunately I was so well dressed with 2 prs of socks that the bones were well protected. Home I realised that I must have stretched the ankle and knee muscle on the right side , I had a blue foot for a few days but nothing serious, but an accident like that can happen so fast!
It kept on snowing for 3 days intermittently and the roads were a health and safety hazard, not to talk about the falling temperature during the night. Daytime -2 and then a drop to -9, the snow just starts to melt and then it ices over it. So it came that we were sliding to church this morning early, must say that your driving skills are truly put to the test in such circumstances ,We reached church in one piece but we were only 10 people.
Christmas day was very cold, we did not have new snow but none the less, it was a white Christmas.
Barry and I spent the day warm in front of the fire eating our specially cooked chicken with roast potatoes and Christmas pudding all by our selves, saving space for the next day, yesterday, Finbarr and Amanda arrived at 3pm and we then enjoyed a second festive meal with trifle and all!
They brought us the newest in technology, a digital photo frame, and you can look at your pictures at your leisure.
The days are already a slight bit longer and the intensity of the sun has definitely increased. The birds have doubled in numbers as Barry has been feeding them the geese feed (turkey fattening pellets).
Because of the thickness of the snow there were no insects and very little food in nature available and Barry took it upon himself to make sure the birds ,who would in any case survives, are kept alive and well!. It meant that w had an invasion of several different kind of visiting birds like the starlings, the arctic thrush, green finches, gold finches, and then of course our own birds, the red robins, hedge sparrows, bull finches, blue tits, and black birds. All the crows and Mag pies eat whatever is left.
We also noticed yesterday for the first time the rat the size of a small cat, moving ever so confidently between the birds, in and out of its hole in the ground. He must enjoy all his privileges as the pleasure of eating bird food is coming soon to an end! Poor rat!
With the bad weather we were wondering if Gerlof and Sandra got away as the airport at Gatwick were closed since late Tuesday evening!
The cathedral in Longford built in 1850 has burnt down on Christmas Eve. A great loss for the
Architectural heritage and off course for the community, it was such a definite landmark in town.
There was no water pressure as all the water pipes were frozen and the fire brigade had to pump water from the canal through hosepipes to quench the fire. Later in the day it got better and they could use the proper fire fighting equipment.
Another week at home and then a visit to the GP to hear if I can go back to work I would have been home 5 weeks then + the 8 days in hospital 6 in all.
I am back on organ duty at church and it is good!
I will greet you all now with the New year in sight and pray and hope that all your dreams will come true ,that you will experience great wisdom, that you will be able to endure the trials and tribulations that lies ahead end that you will count your blessings every day!
Special Greetings to our tante Poppie! May she experience the love and wonderful dearness of our Lord.
Travel safely, lock your doors, watch your step. May the summer be warm ,may it rain where it is dry!
Regards from a melting freezing wet Cranleymore

Winter groete uit Ierland

Saterdag 19 Desember 2009

MAG ‘HY’ JULLE RYKLIK SEёN IN DIE NUWE JAAR EN JULLE BEHOED EN BEWAAR!
Ek groet vanuit ‘n Cranleymore,’n lekker wintersdag met helder sonskyn en blou lug.
Barry en Christina(Stien....)

Irish Greeting

12 Dec 2009

Good day to all, family and friends,
So we speed to the end of the year and Christmas is on hands.
We only celebrate Christmas in a very close family way , we do not exchange presents because that means that precious monies have to be used for trivial things , we rather give each other the love and companionship that is needed to make Christmas a blessed time!
We have noticed that the recession is talking and there is much less hype about the mass commercialism that overtook this country in the years past.
The weather has stabilized and we are into our 3rd day of beautiful blue skies, bright sunshine even with the sun hanging low in the south there is a glimmer of friendliness on every-ones faces, we became very dark and gloomy in the weeks past, There are still parts of western Ireland that is totally under water, we cannot understand why the government did not declare it a an emergency state. They take children to school in a boat with an engine on massive lakes covering the farmlands; there are no roads to be travelled on!
We have been very fortunate that the water ran off the land as we live on a hill and our grounds are relatively small in comparison with other farm lands! We went to Castlecomer yesterday to pick up the last of the silver that was not sold and in spite of being winter it stays beautiful! The road is good and the traffic volume was remarkably low for a Friday and we travelled the 156km in 2 +1/2hrs. Some of the roads have not been converted to main roads yet and you slow down to 60km/hr.
There are no flowers to speak about at present, I took some time in the middle of the day on Thursday to cut out all the dead and rotten pansies in the baskets and they have already brightened up!
The birds are always a joy, their mannerisms are fascinating to watch and Barry hung the 2 peanut feeders where we can watch them from the 2 windows looking out over the back garden.
The bigger birds, the geese are ever so cute, they know me now and don’t run away any more but Barry they adore as he feeds them and take care of their accommodation! He cleans the donkey house 2x a week and gives them clean straw, they do not mess where they sleep and that makes the cleanup process much easier and the used straw is then placed on the compost heap and we hope that we will have excellent compost for the vegetable garden next year¬
I have not returned to work yet as the Dr did not think it a good idea, I have to consult with the surgeon on the 12th Jan to get the operation booked! So far so good, I am well aware that something is not 100% but copes well and with my fat free diet, the possibility of having another attack is slim.
I am at the point of baking Barry my 1st fruit cake and as soon as this letter is posted I will concentrate on the preparation of it all!
One of the many visitors brought us a fruitcake and he ate the whole thing within 4 days, it was not ‘n big cake but it seems as if I have neglected him grossly with treats!
We had our budget and people are furious, they did not increase personal tax but will take on scale from 4% for the lowest earners to 20% to the highest earnest in public service, a levy. This includes all social welfare pay-outs and the most vulnerable are the ones that will suffer the most! The banking fraternity laugh all the way because they are the ones that brought this terrible state on the nation and they still earn their millions in spite of the fact that the government had to bail them out of bankruptcy! The worst is that that they cut the duty on alcohol in order that the people will spend their money rather this side of the border than in the North. There the liquor is dirt cheap!
Many of the SA friends visited SA in the last month and the last of the family will also travel soon!
The wedding of Hessie and Attie’s oldest son Attie jnr and his fiancé is the great attraction and I sincerely hope that all will go wonderfully well! May the family enjoy blessed and wonderful fellowship!
I am still not on duty at church as Joy is doing the honours!
We send our fondest regards to our tante Poppie that will have her 101st Christmas this year and we pray that she will stay well!
It would be lovely to hear how the matriculants experienced their exams and those who were writing university exams, thinking of Thilo in Saudi especially, the wonderful achievement of the daughter of Haya and Kobus, Anneke. Is still to be praised! All the others that did so wonderfully well! Our heartiest congratulations!
All of you who are going to travel please do it safely!
Lock your doors! Be alert and careful in everything you do!
Do take care
Warm regards from a stabilised weathered Ireland!

Greetings from a devastated Ireland

28 Nov 09 Saturday

Good day to all far and wide, north and south, east and west, near and dear!

Our island is under water with severe consequences. People are devastated and stranded on the little patch if land that there house is build on. Many a villages has been evacuated, the water run 3ft deep through their properties. The old people have been removed to nursing homes they lost everything! Busnisses ruined!

In all the trouble and all the dire need for help not a person in this country has mentioned the help of the Lord or convened a prayer meeting to pray that the rain must stop and the flooding subsided. The Lord is so far removed from the Irish that it is frightening. Catholic and Protestant alike. Talk about a wake-up call, if these weather patterns are not regarded as part of the global warming then who is talking!?????? But no-one is listening!

I also had a wake-up call and mine was very personal I landed for 8 days in hospital with severe cholisistitis. The swelling and inflammation was so severe that I needed 3 different kinds of scan and nuclear x rays, ultra sound/scans to determine where the stones went to and if there were any! Still waiting for the last result but fortunately the big boss. Mr Ash(Egyptian I think) was lenient and allowed me to go home until the operation is scheduled early next year. Blood result not back to normal but I will survive!

Not a good way to lose weight but it kick started it any way after fasting for 4 days and fluids for 2.

Fortunately I don’t get hungry anymore and have no desire for food every mouthful is an effort. I am also paranoid that the pain will start again and I don’t think I will be able to stand it a second time.

I am home now, after a week+, long days in hospital and my friends from ward and hospital where I work, were wonderful, Finbarr drove from Dublin fetched his dad and came to visit me when the weather was at its worse, Since then Barry drove every day in for 2 hours as the hospital is 35km away in the same town I work. Mullingar, a teaching hospital and every morning and some evenings I had the rainbow nations of doctors around my bed. There was not one Irish born dr in this surgical group, from the lightest pale yellow skin to the darkest of Africa.

I ate for the 1st time last night a small bowl of Barry’s stew FAT FREE and did not get sick, my diet so far consisted of grated apple, fruit juices with only trace fat in it and a weetabix for breakfast I got some fat free milk yesterday but until then I only had black rooibos tea over this breakfast. As every bite I take should be as near to fat free as possible. A dry piece of brown toast to nibble on in between.

I eventually get full use of my liquidiser by making smoothies for lunch!

Today the forecast is some drier weather and the winds less severe with some sunshine; we are still waiting for the sun temp this morning -3.cel.

Barry was very lonely but thankfully he had the geese to look after and that helped they are lovely they have put on weight and are clean. They come to him now and talk to him. They are still afraid of me

They only knew me 3 days when I disappeared. They are treated as princes or what- ever they may be, we did not sex them and will wait patiently to see what happens when the breeding season starts, they may be all male for all we know!

The fog is still hanging heavy outside, just been to the shop for Barry’s paper. He threw some bread to the geese and I took a photo from far away, as soon as I come near they run away!

The temp has risen to 0 and the fire never burnt out last night and we could start it from the left over embers and the house is lovely and warm.

The birds are cold and hungry and Barry provides diligently oats, and peanuts, they do not eat fruit, and we fill them up with bread crumbs and everything that stays over in a plate. Green finches, gold finches, hedge sparrows, bull finches, black birds, red robins, lady /male wagtails, the black crows and magpies are also frequenting to grab the left- over.

So many are going to SA for December and I hope those who are there enjoy it and those who plan to travel do it safely! Those who are going to attend weddings, may it be a lovely occasion!

The very sad report regarding the abuse by priests in the catholic church was released this week and I am not here to judge but I believe that they are the anti Christ in themselves, they blatantly lie and deny that they did anything wrong. Some have admitted but many are still denying the facts. Very very sad!!!!

I believe that a large number of family members had birthdays and still to have, our wishes are with them all for a good blessed year ahead. To all those who so brilliantly achieved in their final years, CONGRATULATIONS! Those who are still writing exams and studying hard everything of the best!

Our special regards to tante Poppie and we hope that she is keeping as well as can be expected.

Be careful while driving, lock your doors, and watch where you go.

May it rain where it is still dry, and we pray for those who have been affected by the tremendous floods, and take care!

Love and warm regards from us in a cold shivering Cranleymore!

Wintter warm groete van Ierland

Sondag 15 Nov 09

Jammer!!!!

Winter Greetings from Ireland

7 November 09

Good day to all, family and friends
Some of you may know the term ”hutspot” where everything you have left are put into one pot and outcome a stew like dish ,lip smacking tasty. Here it has been done with every element available in the weather pot, all thrown in together and we have strong winds, continuous rain, some brilliant moments of sunshine, lasting 10-20 seconds, early ,very early evenings and gray mornings! This is called WINTER!
During the week, as I was on my way back from work, Barry thought some-one was calling him urgently from outside, opened the back door quickly and answered”Yes....!?”, bewildered looking around, seeing no-one he heard this urgent call again and looked up to see a flock of swans flying fairly low in formation over the roof, struggling against the strong winds and making these nearly humanlike calls to each other. He says it was one of the most beautiful sights he has seen in a long time- sorry I missed it!!!
Hours of deliberation, bullying of the 1st degree, disregard of human feelings the following materialized at work.
The manager of the Nursing home resigned and left within a week, With the financial crisis the senior management cannot appoint a person from outside and the post has to go to some-one internal BUT no- one wants to work there as resources are scarcer than chicken teeth and the work very demanding and patient care of utmost importance. The normal nursing staff agreed to 18% cut in hours but with development the managers were put on the spot and told , one of you have to take over in the nursing home, the most senior of them was told to go down and when she said , she does not think she will be able to cope with the short staff and cut hours she was told , that all the managers will now work only 20 hrs a week and the staff nurses will keep their hours and the cut will come from the ward management because none of them want to work there and their argument “ the reason the previous manager left” he was an excellent administrator and very good in organising but with no staff and 2 women continually interfering and refusing his request , he had enough and up and out. He is going to a Nursing Home with excellent credentials and outstanding record with Hiqa the control board looking after the well being of Nursing Homes. Many tears were flowing, and morale lower that low we have to continue with this unbelievable behaviour of the Director/Manager of Nursing and the Human resources official. No one of us dare to become a “whistle blower” regarding the bullying because the walls have ears and you cannot trust the nearest and dearest to you in this situation.
Very many of the staff in theatre had the SWINE flu , a anaesthetist came to work not feeling the greatest ,not realizing he had the “swine flu” and gave it to the rest of them! Barry and I are careful with keeping our immune system on high alert and we have not fallen ill yet. It spreads very quickly and you become very sick, and needs to be nursed in the home situation in isolation.
With all the rain the beauty of the pansy baskets is out the door and rotten flowers are everywhere to be seen, when the rain stops you quickly pick at them but within minutes you have to desert your post in order not to get wet and sick! With the high temperatures of 2 weeks ago the bulbs all started to grow and we have many standing heads 2” above the ground. The winds are so strong that whatever you put over them gets blown away and the soil makes them grow quicker. We just cannot win!
Tomorrow is Sunday and as ever the most important and joyful day in my week, I am working tonight and will arrive here tomorrow ready to take the uniform off and put clean clothes on and back into the car, on our way to church. It is wonderful how I can manage staying awake going to church and all through the service and other days I am asleep before Barry has pulled the door closed!
Thank you for all the lovely photos I received, I look at them often and enjoy!
Angie, Frik and now we are awaiting the wedding cd/dvd, Georg has fallen of the earth and I am still awaiting a photo of that wedding!!!!!!!
Sam in Brisbane is celebrating his birthday tomorrow, may it be a joyous event! May the exams go well and the year ahead full of new adventures and experiences!
All who are writing exams, whatever kind, read your questions well! Every best wish is with you!
Glad to know that Arnolda and family are safely home after a very traumatic start of a midterm break. Hope sincerely that you were properly insured!!!!!! As the house is now half empty it might be a good idea to leave it empty and make plans to move down under, rent a place in the mean time and I am sure the Ausies will give anything to have the expertise of the 3 ,mother father and daughter in their midst!
I also hope that the Occupational Health AGM went well!
I pray and hope that you will all be very careful and diligent in locking your doors and watch your going about!
May it rain where it should, and other must enjoy the warmth of central heating during the next week of unsettled weather conditions. Gerlof , I enjoyed your writings about Prague.
Our sincere and warm regards to tante Poppie and hope she is keeping well!
Ours warmest regards

Nat en wind in Ierland

30 Oktober 09

Kyk waar jy jou voet neersit!
Ry veilig!
Karin ,jou dogter is pragtig!
Ek groet vanuit ‘n wind verwaaide sopnat Ierland!

Autumn Greetings

Weekend 23-24 Oct 09

Good day to all far and near, family and friends.

I caught most of you out, I made a mistake and only Isabel realized it, Apologies to Jaco van Marle on the farm in the Free State. Congratulations to him for the 14th some 10 days ago! Paul Eloff from Zam also had a birthday on the 18th, belated best wishes!
It made me think, no-one noticed this mistake except one, only one person realised that I did not write last week!
In the mean time life moved on. I cannot even remember where I last ended or where I should start.
We still had a fridge that stayed behind in the GAA grounds after attending the MONSTER AUCTION in Gowna and the man with the trailer could not pick it up as the doors were all locked , We left here in good faith some Saturdays ago in the hope to find some people there and were fortunate. The doors were open and the fridge still standing there.
I dare not ask questions and were extremely worried about the manner in which we will be bringing the fridge home!?
Very carefully we carried the fridge down the flight of stairs, I was told to bring the car near to the door en then the most fantastic manoeuvre took place. Barry loaded the fringe onto the back seat, with the ends sticking out both back doors. With blue rope the doors were secure and off we went! Both doors open like wings! Everyone stayed far away from us who made the trip back easy but we then got the fridge home!
We also attended at Belturbet with good purchases, and the new room is full to the brim!
The old ‘new’ hand woven Persian carpet, looks lovely in the lounge and fit perfectly. Pictures on the wall and we now really have a lovely lounge!
The week that followed was filled with meetings at work, I had no duty, because of time due but the hospital is in die straights! Union representative for our area seems not very interested and we had to inform her instead of her giving us advise. Found it very strange, 2 days later big management /staff meeting where we were, with a slide show, informed of the decline in work and the ratio of staff versus income is not warranted and they want from the staff to cut 150hrs per week from the ward. In reality it is 30% less hours and also 30% less salary! For part time staff it means hardly any income and as it is, their partners or husbands are not working because of the slump in building
Every on up in arms and a ward staff meeting scheduled for Sat was heated, and then suddenly they wanted to vote and me not keeping to my promise of ‘I will only listen’ intervened and explained a few rules and regulations regarding voting on something that has not even been put down on paper, So the meeting had to be reconvened and proper minutes were taken and a vote of no confidence brought forward as conclusion and refusal to cut hours.
Another Union /staff/management meeting took place on Tuesday and the proposals put down on paper were not even mentioned, what a waste of time and we are back to square 1!
I decided to rather keep away and will wait till they want to close the doors or shove me out before I will get involved again!
At the moment I still have a job but really do not know for how long! The poor management of the hospital for years, like in the government, is taking its toll on those who carried them in the good times!
Better news, weather not the best this week but we enjoyed such glorious times the last 6 weeks that we are in no position to complain! The beauty of autumn is grandiose ,colours ranging from bright yellow to dark maroon ,carpets of leaves covering the sidewalks and the small lanes ’ borines’
The front hanging baskets were emptied and winter pansies planted, the strawberry plants, the strawberry plant must be family of the hen with chicks, as the same principle provide growth for the following year and we planted 27 new little plants. The tulips are in and we wait now for the change in hours Sunday night, which means we will have longer evenings and a little longer mornings for a while but then comes the long nights and the short days. “Winter time”! 2 Hours behind SA!
The South African ladies, many wives from doctors working in MIDOC on 6 week stints, met this week at Marthie Potgieter’s house, as she worked yesterday, it was her birthday as well. Once again very pleasant! Met a few new ladies and the one Cilna Maritz and her husband Koos? I think, were long working at Siloam ‘sending Hospitaal’ late 70 into the 80’ies. She knew Paul well, he also operated on one of her children. Also a writer who already has books published, Gerda Ersmus, now Vorster!
2 people I met that used to work or know Paul and Nine ! The world is so small.
Saturday
I worked 2 nights and it was very difficult after being off so long, to get this not so young body back into being very alert, patient, playing a clown, shows intelligence, perseverance, and to be able to make quick and important decisions are at times somewhat tricky.
My back nearly broke as I was, without my knowledge, allocated to St Clair’s the nursing Home it is wonderful how the Lord provides even in simple ways, he send s a nurse that was to have been cancelled for last night, and was not, to arrive and lightened the workload by a 1/3!
Suffering from blurred vision after watching ‘AMAZING GRACE’ we does not often look at films but this was a soul lifting experience! I have to first wipe the eyes.
The wind is howling, the rain is lashing against the windows the trees are bent low and the skies are grey and we are so blessed to be warm and snug in front of the fire while you are hot and bothered!
Hope sincerely that the Krugers’ enjoy their visit to ‘down under’ that Haya and workforce will go into this wedding as medalled warriors! I am not sure but I believe there are a few family members studying for their matric exams and our best wishes are with them, others are doing many modules to achieve their dreams and others are at the end of years of study to venture into the healing field
Lovely to have heard from the Kuypers and as always, every letter is welcome, I have to say there are some gaps in the correspondence register and that needs attention!
I herewith wish the couple to be wedded Gods riches blessings! Nine and Stefan!
Our greetings also to our Tante Poppie, hope that she is feeling well!
No birthdays for this week in my book! Should there be any I am not aware of , Congratulations!!
There where it is dry and rain is needed , may it soon pour ! Those who are hot think of us moving into winter and feel the coolness flow over you!
Those who travel, do it safely
Turn the keys in your doors for safety sake!
Tomorrow, a visiting preacher, hymns chosen and all well for praising the Lord!

With the fragrance of wood burning in the fire, flame red and yellow licking into the air, warm greetings from Cranleymore!
The Dunnes

Herfs groete

Vrydag 9 Oktober 09

Opregte groete vanuit Cranleymore!

Irish Autumn Greetings

Friday night 2/3 Oct 09

Good day all family and friends,

English week and I hope I remember all I wanted to tell you. So many times the letter is all ready in outer space when I think of something else I wanted to share with you.

I am at present sitting in the ward and it is just about 9pm.

Baby sitting a patient who had an Abdominoplasty done yesterday and being a fairly big operation where they give you a beautiful flat tummy again, she had to stay over another night and being a patient of Harley Street (elite Cosmetic Clinic) she could not be moved to the old age home for the night . Cross infe3ction a reason but also because of the name ‘Harley Street’ and the contract we have with them in Ireland!

I am prepared for a lonely night, TV Times next to me so that I can choose which films I want to watch, a few sudoku’s and of course they never let me go free, a bit of accreditation work as well.

Going back to last week Saturday, we did go to the Monster Auction in Gowna, Isabel will remember well surrounded by lakes and we stopped at 2 lakes during her visit, one very tranquil and the water so bright that you can see every stone in it and the other lake was on both sides of the road, we drove underneath the road to get to both of them. The village is just really a cross roads with Pub , convenient store, petrol pump on the side of the road in front of the shop, a church ,cemetery a few unfinished houses in a housing estate. Outside town you will find the very well kept GAA grounds, with every amenity available to the Gaelic football and Hurling mad Irish.

The Irish very much keep Africa time and we started a good ¾ hr later than advertised but no was is worried and here I experienced for the 1st time an auctioneer that bids backwards.

Lot no 1 a single chair ( there were 750 items and each one was individually sold, and him spending at least 10 min on each item)

“Let start the bidding at €20 , not a sound, €19, still very quiet except the gossiping going on,€18 is the bid, repeated about 10x and with no reaction he goes 1 euro down until he got reaction at €2, it was an absolute disaster 3 hours later he was at no 107, which I likes very much and patiently waited for by going outside several time where the farm machinery was, and a second auction taking place at the same time as the partner in crime must have realised they will be there till Sunday night if he does not start outside in the mean time. He followed the same tactics of starting high and working backwards, so it happened that the other item Barry was interested in, an antique mower, came under the hammer at the same time as my Royal Albert tea set.

I was bidding inside and he outside with more success than me because the woman whom the tea set belonged to was buying it back and was prepared to pay whatever the price was going to be.

We also discovered that the auction were donations from the community in order to bring in some funds for the GAA of Gowna!

Only one horse, one pig for sale, no chickens, or geese as we had hoped. We also bought a fridge, brand new for a few €, everything

still there as the man who offered transport never arrived, so we will have to make another plan.

Sunday was Harvest Thanksgiving Service, and we had a full church Praise the Lord! To play the organ to so many voices was a great joy!! I played SA Psalms and Hymns from my big book which Isabel brought me and it was brilliant as interludes and after the service. Could not stay for tea as it was getting late and I had to get ready for work, so we missed out on all the delicious fat making cakes and had a boiled egg instead!

Left for Castlecomer just after 12.30 on Monday afternoon after I had a bit of a sleep, to attend the Antique auction where we had a few pieces for sale and were also in the buyers market.

Were in good time for viewing and booked into the B&B at 6pm to find out that that the family who runs the place does not believe in TV’s or even a radio in the room! We were there and that was where were going to stay. Very hospitable lady and a lovely room , a lovely bathroom, Direction back to Kilkenny to find something to eat and after a good supper wholesome veggies and a good piece of Sirloin steak we drove the 18km back to Castlecomer to relax and go to sleep. We settled at 8.15pm and I was very tired and not at least worried about the stupid ‘box’ absence went to sleep immediately and woke the next morning at 8 nearly 12 hours!

The house was an old school building and beautifully renovated with excellent taste in furniture. Ground immaculately groomed and a grand piano in the lounge/dining room! OOOOoooooo!!!! I so much wanted to sit in front of it and get going but behaved myself well!

Off to the next auction where we spend, in times of recession a few valuable €’s in the hope that after renovation we will get a good price for the furniture. We were very fortunate to buy an old, in need of work Bombay press, very much the same as the one Arnolda bought to take to Canada, if she still has it. Leather dining room chairs and a much looked for Persian carpet!!!!the rest were real bargains and in good condition. It will keep Barry busy for the winter months and then we will dispose of it in the spring!

Chests of drawers with marble tops and Georgian tables on casters which are very lovely and it felt good to be surrounded by things that are familiar to you.

We drove back in the last light of the day after a long day of bidding and not buying except when the price was right. Our own items were last on the auction and did not fetch the prices we would have liked but we did make a bit of money! and we are happy!

Home, sweet home and even sleeping only one night in a strange bed, made me appreciate my own bed very much!

By 1pm Wednesday the truck arrived and all was packed into the new room, very exciting, and every now and again we admire our purchases!!!

Autumn has arrived and for the 1st time today, in about 4 weeks we had rainy cloudy miserable weather with winds picking up now and promised to be blowing at 80km/hr during the night and with that the youngest of the nuns just left after she came to inform me of the fire that was outside!

The grounds of the hospital belonging to the nuns have quite a few acres under grass which were not cut for 2-3 years and this year with the better weather in Sept the man who always cut the lawns said he will cut the fields charge a small amount for doing it and then the bales would belong to him. So about 16 days ago the grass was cut and baled. Last weekend we had trouble with youngsters playing in the fields between the bales trying to set them alight. At 8.15 this evening the hospital received a call the bales are alight. Fire brigade called and 8 men bravely fought the fire which was started by these youngsters and apparently they stuffed firelighter into the bales, poured some fuel over it and there you had the most spectacular bon fire thinkable. When the fire got out of control the kids must have run away and left the place in blazes. Just 10.30pm and the fires are out. The nun took photos, and it was mighty flames reaching several 100ft into the sky. I knew nothing as I was typing and minding my patient, not looking out windows. Fortunately the fields are some distance from the hospital and we were safe but there were some houses quite near to the nearest bale that was set alight! So much for a quiet Friday night. Naughty children are every where in the world, but I must say there is an element of real un-discipline-ness

in Ireland that is frightening!

Lisbon treaty voting is over and the voting poles are closed and now we all wait in anticipation for the result! The Government is not a show piece of honesty and integrity and transparency has not surfaced here yet and they continue covering-up for each other

But I doubt if they will stay in power if the vote is ‘NO’

I will be off for a few nights until next Saturday night, looking forward to being at home and in the garden.

I have 9 new hanging baskets filled with winter pansies and hope to change the baskets in the front of the house, which lasted 6 months, during this time off!

The leaves are falling fast and the colours along the motorways and roads are beautiful!

I have waffled on long enough and wish every one studying; the very very best of memory ability, those who are waiting for rain like Jaco in Reitz, and may it pour as well as in poor dust drenched Australia.

The winter creeping nearer to the Canadians and us in Europe getting ready for the inevitable, wet, cold, and darkness of winter.

Thank you to all who answers my letters , Joy, Sue, and Thabo (Sam) I hope that you guys there in Brisbane make the best of every opportunity to enhance your knowledge!

Pauli in Hoedspruit, I enjoyed your letter, so please include me in future correspondence!

Always be watchful, never let your guard down, locked the doors and watch your step! Enjoy the month of October the most beautiful month of the year as Mimmie Coertze used to sing!

Regards to tante Poppie, and Birthday wishes to Hildegard on the 12th!

Greetings from Ireland

Friday 4 Sept 09

Good day to all, far and wide, and some nearer!
Walking (sloshing) through the bottom field, under water, I realised once again the preciousness of living in the country and not in a town or city,
We are officially now in autumn and the black berries are late and so is the raspberries. With my little container I walked along the fence and picked every black berry that was ripe and not devoured by insects.
The raspberries stand 6ft tall and are only starting to have fruit now, so on the stove at this very moment I am cooking blackberry/raspberry jam!
You cannot eat the fruit from the plant as it is not safe, you can get parasites from it as it grows wild that is the black berries, and there is not enough raspberries to warrant a separate cooking session.
Now the picking of blackberries comes along way, during war times the government gave permission for people to walk onto farm land to pick the berries as a source of food, the berries are rich in Vit C and filled the tummies of hungry people in a time of need!
We are very fortunate that there is no ’time of need’ and in spite of the recession I am still employed and earning better money than I ever enjoyed in SA. Therefore with thankful hearts we start and end each day! The redundancies at work have been stopped for the time being after 4 people were let go last week. A Union meeting with management on Tuesday brought this about as there were some irregularities in the process when it came to the Nursing staff employment regulations, meaning that we can all breath freely and the sleepless nights for some are over, I have to admit that I never felt threatened but was prepared in any case should my hopes be shattered!
Last night I was all on my own with 2 patients, went well as they were both stable, I did about 10 Sudoku’s and 10 Code Word Puzzles, looked at a very sad but realistic film of an alcoholic mother and what a terrible decease it is, the devastation it brought into the family and the trauma to the children, good after midnight.
Here at home I would like to sing the praises of my husband, he is just unbelievable, never stops and every week there is something new he starts.
Since Monday this was the events! Polish guy came back and although Barry said he will not take him on again, his heart softened and I think he was glad.
Visit to the Hardware shop, purchasing the new gate, chicken wire netting etc.
3rd Railway sleeper cemented in, fence between road and garage completed.
The donkey house tidied up and all goods lifted up off the floor and space made for the chickens and geese that we plan to get. All possible holes in the fence around the bottom field secured.
Tuesday the Pole had to go to the welfare to sign on for his money and Barry did the plumbing that was disconnected when the new room were created and my extra washing machine made redundant, A New water pipeline was created with a tap. All with stopcocks so that the water can be turned off by the turn of the screw driver!
The delivery from the hardware shop was wonderful till we realised that the support post onto which the hinges have to go is on the wrong side, disappointment was great, but Brian in the shop promised that he will correct it by phoning and to find out if there is one in the manufacturer’s yard that is the other way round. He forgot to phone back and we were in despair!
Wednesday
In the mean time it is still raining it started now there some 12 weeks back! With the Pole at hand things moved very quickly and soon the fencing was secured on both sides of the shed
Contacted the hardware shop and he apologised but there is a gate available and will be delivered as soon as it arrived.
Thursday. While I was asleep the 2 men took the old gate off and placed it between the shed and the railway sleeper , now the bottom field are separated from the yard! It really looks good!. This all take precision work especially with Barry as perfectionist and the Pole who could not give an iota,
The new hinges had to be secure into the pillars at the gate and that was even more difficult as it needs to be precise. Wonderful stuff that goes into the holes to hold the enormous bolts, hardened like steel!
Now the front is open and suddenly we have no security!!!!as if a farm gate would have stopped any-one! The gate did not come.
Friday.
This morning a miracle happened and there was a patch of clear sky with brilliant sunshine and off Barry went to cut down 3 irritating trees,
Their shadows are so thick that the ground underneath them never dries
And they interfere with the electricity cable and we were warned to cut then down, it is fast growing trees and in 3 years time they will be well grown again! We cut them down the year we arrived on the ‘estate’ 4 ½ years ago!
Then it happened the gate arrived and by the time I got up just before 2pm the gate was in place!!! And it looks good!
Now fully secured we will sleep well tonight!
The bird children are spoilt rotten, sits and wait every morning for Barry to get their breakfast- we counted quickly one afternoon about 40 eating at a time! Too beautiful! The days are becoming shorter quickly the sun rose at 06h45 this morning and it is now dark at 9pm. Temperatures in the morning down to 6-8 and does not rise above 14 any more!!!!! And off course even if the sun shines, it still rains!!!!!!!
Birthdays are few in my book We think of Maryke in memory whose birthday it would have been tomorrow the 5th and then of Michael Knight, Annette’s husband, maybe Paul can let him know that after so many years I still remember!
To all who so regularly talk to me via email thank you, Joy in Australia especially, Trish is quiet and so is Sue in Canada! Hope all is well.
Thilo in Saudi please let me know how you are!
Hope it rains in the dry area, that all the crops reaped and sown are good, all the animal thriving, all those studying , enjoy and everything of the best to Pauli from Gerlof and Sandra that is returning to SA
You must all take care, be watchful, and never forget to secure the doors and windows, trust in the Lord and be well!
Thankful regards from the Dunne’s on a floating Ireland

Groete vanuit 'n immer nat Ierland

Vrydagnag 28 Augustus 09

“ Goeie nag allemaal, of Goeie dag allemaal”

Hier by ons gaan dit bitter sleg.

Lekker verjaar jonge juffrou!

Wees versigtig waar jy trap!

Saterdag 15 Augustus

Goeie more almal, familie en vriende,

Geen heinings of drADE NIE EN DIE SKAPE WANDEL HEERLIK OOR EN WEER DIE STUKKIE TEER OM WEERSKANTE VAN DIE PAD DIE SOET GRAS BYTEKOM DUS IS DIE GEMIDDELDE SPOeD NIKS MEER AS 25KM/P/U NIE WANT JY WEET NIE WAT WAG OM DIE VOLGENDE DRAAI NIE

Alles was nat, die sambreel Barry se wind jak, my windjak ,my hare het behoorlik gedrip!

Greetings from a very wet Ireland

23 August 09 Sunday

Good day to all family and friends,

Our entertainment on a Sunday afternoon on TV is usually a James Bond movie, this one must be very they still use haukie talkies and the Mercedes dates put of 1967!
It always takes me some time to write this weekly letter and have the laptop in the right position, on my lap.
The freeing of the Lockerbie Bomber has made the headlines since his release ...one can argue any way you want to but in the end the Lord knows it all!
The gender dispute about the SA Athlete and Bolt the fasted man on earth for a while in the 100 and 200 meters, it is a wonder they run in meters and not in feet as little has changed here , has overshadowed the recession for a while!
Since I arrived in Ireland I have very much kept to myself but stepped out on Friday morning after I have been invited to a coffee get together of South African women living in Westmeath and Longford counties.
This group of women meet every Friday for coffee and breakfast unbeknown to myself and were invited by one of the ladies that remembered that I might not be working every Friday and as it happen, I was off and in Marks and Spencer’s coffee shop the world was changed into South Africa with humming and bussing of 10 women nearly talking together in a foreign language and people staring. Nurses always seem to find each other and as the majority of the women were the wives of Doctors working here for MIDOC on 3 month contracts or engineers with something else in-between!
I have to admit that it was surely one the most enjoyable mornings I have ever experienced here in Ireland!
Speaking to Louise who trained in Bfn at the same hospital as I did ,just a little later than me, and her husband working here more than in SA the women across the table looked at me and asked what my maiden names was...Eloff...
W H A T???????????? She said ...do you know a Dr Paul Eloff? And of course that was the beginning of sharing a wonderful teacher, professional person brother and friend !!!
I have already let Nine know but here is who they are. Wessel and Rina Herbst. He started out as a young doctor as the Dr at Groothoek during 1971-75 and he still apparently refer back to what Dr Paul would have done!!!
Rina was and still is a gold medallist in flower arrangement she has been for years the chairperson of the VLU translated Women agricultural association where ever they were posted! It was wonderful to talk here miles away of all Paul and Nine’s children and grand children and me of course ever so proud!
Here in Cranleymore Autumn is approaching rather fast and morning temperatures has dropped to 8 , rising again during the day but that is our first indication of a definite change in weather it rained so much that the grass freshly cut yesterday when the sun eventually came out, that we have now flooded lawns, literally under water!
The vegetable garden has been dug, and the last of food traces removed! All the onions in the fridge and the miniature carrots cooked! the green tomatoes fell and were devoured by bugs and we had no pleasure in it!
Flower wise we still have gladiolas and dahlias flowering, some sweat peas and climbing roses. The nasturtiums did not produce what we expected and look somewhat sorrowful in the pots! On the window sill in the kitchen I have some joy in the new growth of Cyclamens x3 with leaves the size of saucers.
I do not mind the winter coming, at least we know what it holds and expects nothing but to be continually disappointed is very disheartening!
Arnolda’s holiday in Mexico seemed to have been a real beautiful experience and I sincerely hope that Gerlof will give us a similar reflection of his visit to SA!
I am ever so sorry to hear that it is so dry in Australia, it reminds me so much of being always hoping for rain while I grew up and now I would like to channel the water from here to where-ever it is needed. The new room is nearing completion and I just wonder what will be next project of keeping Barry busy.
We do plan to put a gate between the bottom field and where the yard ends and for that, new posts will have to be planted , these already delivered in the form of railway sleepers. Well any one available for some digging????.............
THERE SURELY Are a GOOD 100 BIRD CHILDREN IN THE HEDGE AND THE SWALLOWS IN THE DONKEY HOUSE DID GO FOR THEIR FIRST FLIGHT yesterday 3 weeks after being hatched, somewhat lazy and back for a snooze in the afternoon! The female swallow sitting on the eggs in the garage abandoned the nest or died in her travels but they are no more, sad to say!

Sunday is nearly at an end and with Ps 78 as our sermon and lovely hymns to complete the spiritual feasting, it was a good and spiritual experience!
Birthdays have come and gone and somewhere along the line I fell off the bus...but Paul (Aus) I send a message to your mom. Hope you had a lovely day!
I hope that those who are at the Boskamp this week will be greatly blessed!
My thoughts are with Karin, and Stephan, Anke who is recovering well and our tante Poppie! Angie ti was great to hear your voice and that of the children and Groovy that was a great gift!
Thank you to all who send good wishes!
Be careful and aware all the time , drive carefully and watch your step!

Greetings from an ever changing Ireland

Saturday 8 August 09

Dear family and friends,
How terrible to start nearly every letter with the weather but in this island of ours that seems to be the most important news reel of every news bulletin. We had 3 glorious days, some cloud cover, lots of sun, please note, NO RAIN, with slight southerly winds. Today is another story, grey, dark, mist rain, and somewhat cooler than the 20 degrees we experienced since Wednesday,
We made a decision to go away for a few days after a weeklong discussion. I so desperately want to go to Galway and surroundings Westport etc, but being middle of the summer season the hotel accommodation is double as Galway is the tourist attraction city of Ireland. We love the north and that is where the prices are also within reach of the lesser affluent of society. Still expensive but I reckoned that ,we have not been away from this house except for 2 night in 2006 when we went to Exeter for the wedding , all other trips were one day affairs and in spite of recession we can be a little extravagant and spent a few nights in a hotel at the coast. Bundoran, very small but on the sea far north in Donegal Bay. We will leave here after church tomorrow and arrive at 4pm at our destination God willing and enjoy being served for about 84 hours in all. That sounds just great and I can’t wait!
Back in Cranleymore the bird population is large in numbers and still growing. The swallows in the donkey house is a week old today and the female in the garage with the new nest is sitting since Wednesday on 4 eggs. The young robins are all changing colours and it is wonderful how the Lord has provided the different characteristics of each bird specie
The vegetable garden is now totally gone the last onions pulled and the tomatoes died green on the stork. The apples all 9 of them are still there and begin to get red cheeks another 2 weeks and we will taste our own apples. In spite of Barry’s misgivings about the strawberries we have had a great crop, pick about 15-20 everyday and have a lovely fruit desert after evening meal. The sweet peas died and we will harvest some seeds, the Clematis looks lovely and the climbing roses are doing their best. Many roses we have are only one season and therefore will not flower again- we are learning ?!
As you can gather I am officially on holiday, after I kicked off with 2 nights in the nursing home which passed without any problems and not so bad after all. I had a great helper and make a world of difference, medications is my sole responsibility and I got better every time , completed the round in 2 hrs the last night 41 patients and maybe 6 of them taking their medication themselves. The hard work is putting the high dependent clients to bed and make sure they are all tucked in for the night.
I will be away when the announcement will be made of who is to be sacked and who will stay. I think that it will be done according to peoples’ ability to adjust to various jobs. Those who are adamant not to work in the nursing home stand a good chance of going, Those who are computer literate, knows about accreditation and have been trained to train will have a better change and as the good Lord willed it I fall in the last category, so am not worried and will enjoy every minute away!
Coming back from town today I realised that summer is really on its last legs as the long grass are going yellow and the leaves are falling at an alarming rate. I am so fascinated by the hot and long summers Canada experienced so much nearer to the poles and we, exposed to every bit of theatrical weather whim suffer tremendously.
Although our Tante Poppie had her birthday it does not mean that we will forget her and we pray and hope that she will enjoy every day as it comes. Having her there in the Cape Province made me realize how many family members on our side is now living in the Cape. My brother Mendel, Anke his wife and 2 of their children with their families, My cousin Retha has a daughter in Stellenbosch teaching and a brother Tjaart living there as well, then the 2 sons of our Tante Poppie and other cousins from the late Tant Emma, wondering of all these cousins first en second knows each other and communicate? Sitting so far away from your family and I know it was my choice, you always have thoughts about them and would love to hear from them all. How about a family get together and a photo????????? Scholtz’es and extended family, cousins, nieces and nephews, Coetzee’s, Eloff’s!!!
Well I have one birthday in my book and that is of young Gerhard of Frikkie and Elmarie on the 12th. Happy Birthday to the young man, I will send a message nearer to the day!
To all who are studying , everything of the best, those who are preparing to get married, do it well! those who have to pick crops, may the prices be excellent, and those on holiday, enjoy it thoroughly!
Take care regarding your safety, do not take changes, be always alert.
Enjoy the Spring that is around the corner!
Enjoy a blessed Sunday!

Groete vanuit 'n versuipende Ierland

31 Julie 09

En nou drip drip dit so hier in my kop!
Ek voel soos Arnolda se seuns my briewe is altyd dieselfde en daar het lanklaas iets interesants in my lewe plaasgevind.

Sy woon in ’n ou here huis 150 jr gelede gebou , hoё
