18 December 2010
Good day to all, family and friends!
Just in from our trip into the village for the necessary testing the roads and making sure all is fine for travelling!.
At the moment not too bad at all -3 and as there is no wind and with the sun hazing through the cold air it is spectacularly beautiful!
The carpet of snow about 6cm deep brings an eerie stillness about it! Even the noise of the road has been silenced!
It seems pretty certain that we will have a white Christmas!
I have not much news and will keep this short and hopefully sweet!
Paul en Jacob will have their birthdays on the 24th! Many happy returns of the day!
Gerlof and Sandra should be safely in Canada and the rest of you enjoy the summer sun en festivities, never forgetting what it is all about! The birth of our Lord and Saviour!
Paul Linda and family are visiting in the Cape and will carry our best wishes and regards to all Br Mendel and Anke, a letter to follow for them.
We pray and hope that road conditions will be favourable for our journey to Dublin tomorrow for the Christening of Lukas Liam Dunne! Our grandson!
Isabel with Joleen and in- laws in Mozambique must enjoy it! We use to go there often before the war and stayed in the Polana Hotel Lourenso Marques – gives my age away!
The remaining geese seems to love the snow and sit in it as if it was warm!
Thank you Angie for the lovely Photos!
All of you travelling, be careful on the roads
Take care
Snowy greetings from Cranleymore

Groete vanuit 'n ontvriesende Ierland
11 Desember 2010
Liefde groete

Afrikaans 1st then the English!
Liewe almal !
wees gegroet vanuit 'n bibberende Ierland

To the English speaking family and friends!
We have really experienced the cold of cold! My schedule has been tough with 3 nights on, 1 off, and 3 on again I did not get to write!Ii was stranded in Mullingar one day and slept over in the hospital , it was noisy but warm and I was safe! The snow was just too much to risk as it took me 2hrs to get home last Tuesday morning!
The ice in the water tank was about 6" thick!
The last photos was taken this morning -10 degrees !
all those complaining about heat, count your blessings!
We hope that you all are wll and safe!

Winter groete van Ierland
27 Nov’10
Saterdag!
‘n hele 28 dae vroeër as verlede jaar!
Hy was seker so 5 tree van ons af!
Groete vanuit ‘n ysige koue, sonnige Ierland!

Winter greetings form Ireland
Saturday 20 Nov’10
Good day to all, family and friends!
Congratulations to Jaco and Stenelle who are getting married tomorrow!!! God’s riches blessing we pray upon you!
Happy birthday to the twins Paul and Mendel, Jeanne, and Renate(P+H) who will be older by 1 year this coming week!!
May it be a lovely day for all of you!
The light is on otherwise I cannot see the keyboard. It is dry and not too cold but the cloud cover is heavy! 6 Degrees, with a light breeze, no extremes during this week!
Been to the butcher, he does not want the geese as people do not eat goose over Christmas and it is difficult to pluck! Plan B is to put an ad in the paper and see what happens otherwise we will phone Mat who we got the geese from and found out what and where to now! I think Barry is quietly glad the butcher did not want them because I will be lost without them!
I have to take all the leave allocated to me and cannot carry it over to 2011 which means I have more holidays than what I work BUT the days I do work I know that I am not 25 anymore, although the mind still hovers in the vicinity of ‘Young’!
Every muscle, bone and joint were pulled into one massive cramp after a night of special attention to 5 patients who had big operations, during the day the work was divided by 2 nurses but come night , you have to perform miracles!
There are a few lost primroses flowering otherwise a very dull colour scheme outside Inside though the orchid have 24 flowers on and is a great pleasure to look at!
We have made the front pages of the world’s newspapers with the IMF and the EU and some or other dignitaries visiting this bankrupt country. The 4 year plan to safe us will be announced sometime next week but we fear for the worst! As Arnolda cannot understand the things that are going on in the name of safety in the airports so we cannot understand how the Prime Minister and the bank managers can earn more than Barak Obama and many more high officials, Those who brought the Celtic Tiger into life, and robbed the country of all its assets have fled and live everywhere else but in Ireland! They are protected by the law and live wonderful lives!People are desperate and already there has been several suicides and family murders!
The new owner of the hospital where I work is planning a big change and we hope and pray that there will still be work for us next year!
There are some of the recipients of my emails that have gone very quiet and I hope that they are all well! Thank you to all who so regularly write, I enjoy every sentence! I think that most of the exams are now something of the past and hope for the very best results!
The rugby is on this afternoon we first have to shout for the Springboks and then for Ireland, I just fear for our blood pressures!
The Psalm and Hymns are all practised and I am ready for the best day of the week, the organ has given notice and I am presently taking my key board to church until the church committee have made a decision!
Our grandson Lukas is the joy of his parents and his grandparents! He will be christened on 19th of Dec! We will under protest drive to Dublin again! Wish it was nearer!
We were horrified by the murders in Vivo and the Indian honeymoon bride and the publicity it received especially the Indian girl, was not to South Africa’s advantage! This brings me back to the propaganda films which you in SA never see, and it was quite natural for the visitors to go and see what Guguletto looks like and many other places where a person living in SA never would enter at night! It makes me very sad as there must be still so much beauty left for visitors to enjoy and now it has been tarnished!
Therefore please be diligent in keeping watch!
Warm regards to you all from us in Cranleymore

Mid November groete van Ierland
Saterdag 13 Nov’10
Liefde groete vanuit ‘n koue November middag in Cranleymore!

End Autumn Irish Greetings
Saturday 30 Oct’10
Good day to all, Family and friends,
The sun is shining and it is wind still, it is still fairly early in the day and there will surely be a change before this letter is finished!
The last 3 days was rain, rain and specks of sunlight in between and again rain! The Southerly wind was warm but strong!
The leaves fall like snowflakes and the colours warm red to golden yellow! Beautiful!
A rather hectic week for us! Sunday after church we left for Dublin, I should really Castleknock as it is a suburb far out of the hub of Dublin and easily assessable! All went well and we had a lovely afternoon with our grandson Lukas! He was just 6 months old on Saturday. He eats well, shows his preferences very clearly but Amanda is very strict and he gets just the best of everything, home cooked and lots of veggies and fruit! He can laugh, so inspiring you to laugh as well! Wonderfully content and happy child! All praise to the parents!
The garden is out of bounce at the moment! We did notice that some of the daffodils that were left in the ground are now visible, the baskets need dire attention but with all the rain we decided not to waste money and will wait for the early Spring!
Monday was a dull day with the sun just appearing for moments and the wind blowing us off our feet! Tuesday was preparation day as we decided after long deliberations to leave on Wednesday @9am for Cork! Barry has been putting this visit off for many years and it had to be done! Booked a hotel room for the night in Kinsale on the little harbour, very lovely and still full of visitors!
The 1st part of the journey was old road with some highway in between but we got onto the motorway at Port Loaish and from thereon we drove straight to Cork, here is a stretch of road of about 162 kilometres with not one petrol station or restroom off the motorway, you have to take a turnoff into a town to be able to fill your car or have a cup of coffee! The road is very good and 1 ½ hrs later we entered the tunnel under the sea to get into the outer suburbs of Cork Journey time from front door to 1st stop 3hrs and 10 min. Google predicted another 35 min but we did not use that!
The place has changed so much since our last proper visit in 1997( the visit in 2003 was just 2 nights and spent with the family then, no sightseeing.) As we were early we enjoyed a leisure drive to the coastal village of Kinsale where the hotel was and enjoyed the wonderful autumn colours small roads zigzagging through woody areas and small villages with enormous housing estates – the beauty of the hills destroyed for progress and greed! We had tea with Barry’s brother Frank and his wife Breda and had a good chat, which was on our way, left then on the 2nd part of the journey so surprised at the development! The village of Kinsale is on the sea and I love the sea! Unfortunately it rained and we had to wait for a good hour before we could explore the small and narrow streets!
Barry remembered it as it was years ago and he was very sad on the one side but also impressed with the growth! The hills covered now with housing estates and the beauty of the countryside destroyed.
We had dinner with Sharon and the twins Christopher and Nicholas at the hotel, the very best behaved young boys, very well mannered and a pleasure to have a conversation with. We last saw them at the age of 8 and now they are 15jrs old! Doing well at school and partaking in community activities to the full! Very talented as well! All honours to Sharon for bringing up these boys so wonderfully, what a pleasure it was to see and talk to them!
Thursday morning we did the nostalgic tour of where Barry grew up, Douglas, the old house made way for a highway, although some places were still standing! Like the Toomey’s house across the road! Visiting familiar places now unrecognisable! Frank and Breda went with us to the cemetery and we visited the grave of Barry’s parents and other family members who passed away!
After a lovely lunch with them we hit the road again and while putting in petrol, with the pump not working we read the notice. Pay before you get petrol, difficult as I like to fill up my car before a long journey and now you have to guess- they must have had a lot of people putting in petrol and drive off! Little bit inconvenient but we had enough to get us home!
The Lord granted us once again save travelling mercies and we were home at ¼ to 5. The geese were totally mad with gladness for seeing us! That was the first time they were ever left alone for a night! They survived and were none the better off for staying outside for the night! We did plan it like that as the night was going to be very mild and we knew they would be fine outside!
They do restrict our movements in many ways and we seriously consider selling them if not all, at least some!
Just back from a visit to the village where I had to get some cortisone cream and Periton antihistamine for my face as that came up again; as we were travelling back I could feel the tingling going on in the left cheek. I am so highly allergic and all we can think of is that I rubbed cheeks with many people and on Thursday morning we also met Linda, Frank and Breda’s daughter and she might have had a cream on her face with anti ageing component in, which I am super sensitive to, even any of the other ladies with make-up on could have caused it! Just my left cheek!! In the chemist just after I put my card back in my bag I heard a mighty bang behind me and there at the door an old lady good over 80yrs fell! She hit her head on the cement and her glasses cut her nose, she was slightly heavy and had 2 swollen feet and knees matching, I did my good deed for the day and after some 1st aid and the assistance of the Pharmacist we got her up onto a chair, cleaned the face and steri-stripped the cuts, cleaned the bruises and applied some dressings! Taking her history she told me she had a knee replacement in July and that the knee is now very sore! I checked every thing thoroughly and when I was happy that she was well and proper orientated we helped her into the car which her son brought nearer and with advice of getting to an A&E or Midoc a.s.a.p they left! Barry wondered what happened to me as I am usually back to the car before he paid for his paper and bread!
Thank the Lord she was fine when she left and a good ½ later I was back in the car!
The weather as promised is starting to change and temp of 8 degrees might drop as the sun is disappearing fast behind the clouds! Sometimes it even rises when clouds take over, but we are well prepared for the winter and after 2 days of -2 already behind ours back we do not mind, it has to come and tonight we can sleep an hour longer as we enter winter time! I think it is foolish and not good for your health but the authorities have other concerns! The fire gets lit early afternoon and is very warm and cosy!
Thank you for all the lovely letters in the post, I sincerely appreciate them and read them over and over! Haya, Hessie, Arnolda, Gerlof, Nine, Leopold, Paul in VdBijl, Joy in Brisbane, Gerhard in Mazibuku, Sue, and thank you for the “Sambok” Zumbuck ointment Annarie en Nico!!!!! It is on the way, it was confirmed!

Laat herfs groete uit Ierland
18 Oktober’10

Greetings from a 'warm' Ireland
Saturday 9 October’10
Good day to all, family and friends!
It is with sadness that we as family remember our dear cousin and friend Aggie Dewey who passed away earlier in the week! Our sympathies to her children, grand children and family. We remember her always smiling and ready to help!
For family members that do not know, Aggie was the daughter of our dear tante Hetta van Breda, who was a sister to my father( Gerrie Eloff).Elsje is her sister and Hurter her brother(Hanlie in Dar Es’father.)
Weather pattern has gone high-wire this week. The AZORES get the blame for everything but I am not sure where this warm southerly winds have their origin from but instead of having the start of winter everything has been delayed, temperatures are daily above 15 and do not drop below 10 at night. Forecast for today when the fog lift will be 21 degrees!!!!!!!!!!!Hope sincerely the sun manages to get through!
The week past had its ups and downs. It seems unfair that your own tooth can poison you but that is exactly what happened to me! I never do anything in half measures, I go full-out! This famous tooth going back 18 months, lost its filling and I mentioned that it was going to be removed by a Specialist Oral Surgeon on Thursday but to spice things up a bit I started to feel unexplainably awful on Monday afternoon just before my rest prior to going to work that night. Thought nothing of it and shrugged the rigors off as tiredness.[I cleaned the house that morning without my faithful Dirty Devil( the vacuum cleaner)as it gave notice and I swept all the carpets with the broom. You kind of have to clean the carpets even if you do not get the dust out as we live in the country and we walk in every possible kind of muck, mud, stones, goose manure etc.]When I got up after shivering for 2 ½ hrs in bed, under a winter duvet, with severe pain over the liver area nausea out of this world, I realize something is drastically wrong! Between spasm I phoned the surgeon who did the lap choli and he said to get to the hospital a.s.a.p. with a temp of 38.2(my normal temp is usually 35.6).
They were once again wonderful in helping me, I jumped the queue and was attended to almost immediately.! Every possible blood test was done blood gasses you name it and then when the doctor eventually stopped to take the history, as I know stopped vomiting and could converse, they realised that I was toxic from the infection in the tooth and that the Erythromycin (allergic to Penicillin) which I took made me sick and did nothing for the tooth infection! Realizing that I have an appointment for Thursday they immediately started on Intra Venous Antibiotics, there I found myself as sick as a dog with temperatures flying between 39-40 for the 1st 24 hrs with every joint aching and every muscle sore. It felt as if the toxins were pouring from my skin, I felt sticky and smelly with the most awful taste in my mouth, no toothpaste or mouth rinse helped! Thank the Lord that they picked it up quick enough and by Thursday morning 6am I received the last 3 doses prescribed antibiotic via the 3rd cannula inserted during these few days. I had no usable veins left by then.
Barry picked me up from the hospital at 10am and we were 1½ hrs early for the appointment. I looked at the clock in the surgeon’s treatment room and at 12.35 the tooth was out!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I could not believe it! My first ever tooth to be pulled!
He only takes out difficult teeth and impacted teeth. He knew exactly what to do and did it well! I kept on bleeding for a while as I was on Clexane (prevents clots) while in hospital, but eventually could go to bed at eleven that night knowing that my ordeal was over! Snuggled up to my own pillow and slept through the night!
Apart from the enormous gap in my teeth (no one can see it, I just know about it) I have recovered100% and take care of mouth washes and salt water rinses. religiously!
I thank all my South African friends who visited and brought lovely gifts and essentials like rooibostea!
Back home Barry came to a stand-still; he does not re-act well on me being hospitalized! He stayed at the phone in case I may call, He did look after his geese children but that was all. He also cooked for himself and survived.
Yesterday he performed all the tasks of the week in one day, while pulling out the straw for the geese he noticed a strange brown prickly ball under the straw? A Hedgehog, all curled up and fast asleep! We do not know how long he /she have been there? We thought it was too early for hibernation and as they forage usually during the night we hoped that he was just resting. Fortunately Barry did not poke him with the garden fork! Where there is one there will be another one, they usually stay in pairs! Lovely! The grass was also cut after nearly 3 weeks of growth; it was just too wet to dare go into the forest! It looks lovely today, cared for and manicured! The “ Estate”( which is about 2 acres) is in good shape! We do not say anything about the baskets or pot plants. The orchid with the 3 stems of flowers is in process of opening, I am so exited!!!! The hothouse plants are flourishing!
The sale of the Hospital to VMF Group made the front page of the Westmeath Examiner, the local paper and the rumour going round is that this man Mark Gordon has €10million to spend to make this a state of the art hospital and clinical facility! Great news!!!!! He must have kept the money under the bed because it definitely did not come from a bank!?
On the political front all is not kosher, they fight with each other, with the opposition, with back benchers and with the voters the enormous amounts of money that has been squandered is unbelievable, and no one is to blame and the whole world is laughing at this Buffoon Government with a Prime Minister that has lost the respect of the country! Very sad! I can understand why Paul urges us to pray for those in power as they do need it desperately!
Tomorrow crowns the week!!! The very best day out of 7!!!! All the hymns are well practised and we are looking forward to the next soul enriching sermon. It is unbelievable that we here in Corboy parish are so privileged to have a man of God, gifted with scripture explanation and in my life time I have heard many a preacher and good ones believe me, but this man is exceptional. I have urged him to let me have the last series of sermons in a word document but he is so humble, he feels it is not good enough!
Well my special prayers go to 3 families, and they will know who they are- that the work started in the hearts of members of these families it will grow and flourish under the care of the Holy Spirit. Those who are feeling that life is unfair and those who feel that they cannot cope! Trust and obey!
Mother and son got through the 1st week of separation and Amanda were challenged with now being a mother, partner and house-wife. PF(Finbarr) is working very hard and long hours and we pray for success in his business, Little Lukas enjoys the attention of devoted women, young and older and flourish apparently under it all! He is just smiles when he gets home, eats well and sleeps well! Model child!
Birthdays are my friend Linda today, Hildegard on the 12th and Jaco van M the 14th.
May you have a wonderful, happy day and may the year ahead be filled with good experiences, many surprises, joy and good health!!!!!
Always lovely to hear from those who write regularly and those who does not write so often!
Take care of your safety, home, road and where-ever you find yourselves. We were devastated by the shootings at Northgate.
The Commonwealth Games shows SA with 7 gold medals! We are very proud!
Warm regards from us in Cranleymore!

Groete vanuit 'n sopnat Ierland
Saterdag 18 Sept’10
Tyd vlieg!

Greeting from a Cool Ireland
27 Sept’10 Monday
Good day to all, family and friends,
I think the sunshine, blue blue skies and wind stillness, have confused me totally! Morning temperatures have dropped to 4!!!!! The previous week was miserable, just not nice, and when the sun did shine the wind was bitterly cold and very unpleasant. It is not that I am moaning because I do not the mind cold and wet, and neither do I mind the wind but I do prefer sunshine!!!!!!!!
We are just back from a tour through the Estate! I have not been able to take a good look at all around for more than a week!
Worked awkward hours, was called in when the hospital was supposed to be closed and then had to stay open for 2 medical cases, and no one was available.
Back to the tour! The lawnmower now with 5 years of hard labour on its card, gave notice. The frame work just collapsed on Barry and with ingenuity he fixed the thing but cannot change cutting levels now and therefore the grass was cut 10 days ago at a high level and looks like a forest all round! We will have to invest next spring in a new machine!
The hedge is still lovely with all the wild roses now hanging with rich red rose-hip knobs ,the autumn berries hanging heavy and very red ,which is apparently not a good sign for the winter, but looks good all the same!
The baskets and flower pots are not to be discussed! A sight for sore eyes!
We will endeavour to put it right later in the week when I will have some time off! If the weather holds!!!! Hopefully!!!!! It is a massive job, as all the pots will have to be emptied of their soil, re-composted; all the bulbs sorted and replanted. And the rest discarded.
The fence on the far side of the geese camp, allows some sun in now that 2 trees were cut down and the grass which has been waterlogged for the last 5 1/2 years have now dried out and looks better, next year the rest of the trees will come down! The grass in that field does not need cutting as our white little lawnmowers are doing their job perfectly!
There is no vegetable garden at present, and the rhubarb will have to be replanted and fenced off next year they belonged to the geese and were trampled to nothing! To be able to extend the shed Barry moved the one apple tree further back and they are all going into dormant state for the winter ahead!
Well the roses presented me with a surprise, the 2nd crop of pink roses are covering the wall and looks lovely! The gladiolas, which were waiting for, turned out to be miniature Gladiolas with crinkled edges very pretty but delicate and they suffered severely with the rain of the last 2 weeks!
The swallows are gone, the second lot of fledglings were just about 4 weeks old and we hope they survive the long journey to Africa!
The house birds sits like monkeys sunning themselves in the sun and wait for Barry to put the oats out every morning and then the flock in their hundreds for a nibble onto the back wall!
The government has issued a decree that the millions of crows, mag- pies and other black undignified feathered friends may be shot if becoming a pestilence, now we have been getting rid of them, for a time already ,as they will easily pick up a gosling and devour it! Then it was done in secret but now we can do it without feeling bad! We do not shoot them but gives them nice little treats which give them a tummy ache, which they do not like and then they fly past!!!!!
The trees have started to shed their leaves and other has started to turn to the most magnificent kaleidoscope of winter colours ranging from bright yellow to dark maroon!
Indoors I have the pleasure of my geraniums and the orchid which is going to flower with 3 stems of 10 flowers each! Unreal!!! 2nd time this year!
My hothouse is coming along fine (the front pallor which is not in use) where green and red peppers are growing and some other plants I rescued from near death!after given to me by my dear friend Marthie!
Ireland has gone through some rough patches regarding our Prime Minister who, true to tradition seemed to have had a ‘good’ night some 10 days ago and then had an early morning radio interview and did not come over very presentable, causing him to publicly apologize for not being up to scratch, but now they are making fun of him on U Tube and in the USA.
It brings us into the lime light for the wrong reasons and on top of it all he earns more a year than Barak Obama!!!! There may be an election looming before long with polls dropping his popularity into the mud! Such a pity that people in high office does not get a special course in public behaviour and conduct, it would prevent situation like this!
Yesterday was surely one of the best Sundays this year; Corboy parish of the Presbyterian Church Ireland had their Harvest festival and thanksgiving service. The sermon was conducted by a very well known missionary and retired? moderator of the church also known to quite a lot of people in SA where he visited, Dr John Dixon. It was good, nutritious feeding of the soul! I was extremely privileged to play the organ for the occasion and had some of my retired work friends as well as SA friends attending! I appreciated it so very much Marthie , Annarie& Nico!!!!
Then I went to work and got through the night with 4 hours sleep in 34 hours!
Birthdays are scarce in my book, but in case to those who does read this far and happens to be a year older! Happy Birthday!
I know that there are all over the world some-one studying for an exam! Do your best and enjoy the great gift of being able to study! There are so many intellectually disabled people in this country that your heart bleeds for them. Never knew but one of the anaesthetist working at the hospital has 2 such children, we are as family and friends very thankful for all children born healthy and very intelligent into this world!
I thank all those who wrote lovely newsy letters since my last reminder! Thank you also for those who live far away that stays in regular contact, especially Joy in Australia, I do appreciate it very much!
I read about ’ Oupa Koos’ passing away and do not know who this is, please help! Could it be anybody I should know?????
I have come to the end of my waffling and hope that this letter will find you all in good health and spirits!
Always take care
Love and regards from us to you

Vroeg September groete
Saterdag 4 Sept’10
Hahahaha!
Dit was eens ons mees geliefde vakansie plek!

Hahahaha!
End August Irish Greeting
Wednesday 25th Aug’10
Good day to all, family and friends,
I am cheating as this letter will be a few days late and will cover 2 weeks.
The weather has been playing cat and mouse with us, Moments go by and you think AaaaaaHhhhhhhhhhhh!! Summer is back and the next moment you have to run for cover as the heavens will open without notice and you will be drenched, and suddenly it is cold! You reach for the cardigan again just to remove it an hour later when the sun is bright and beautiful in the blue, blue skies!
The temperatures has been falling steadily at night time and at some stage last week it must have dropped below (7)the marker set for the thermostat to kick in at the hospital and the heaters went on full blast, we nearly suffocated and the poor patients had all a free sauna, they say you do not get cold from something like that but I definitely did as I dripped most of the night and the fan was on and you walk passed soaked in perspiration ,cool down for a while and then moments later you are so hot that your clothes are sticking to you! I was also very generous and gave this not requested cold to Barry, and as a man he was much sicker from it than me, fortunately we are both on the road to recovery!
We were ever so privileged to have Finbarr(PF) or Patrick as he is known to all in Ireland, Amanda and our grandson Lukas visiting on Sunday! I could not come near him but that took nothing away from his charm! He is a boy through and through! He knows his own mind and if you do not act quick enough he will let you know in no uncertain terms! His development is far beyond the milestones and there is surely enough gray-matter for a profession in high places!!!!He is absolutely gorgeous!
Flowers looks really not good, only waiting on the gladiolas, some of the Dahlias have opened and brought some colour! Others are drowned or dying! Tomatoes are finished and we had a good crop this year, still a few green ones hanging on the dying storks! Roses may have a second sprout of flowers but if the cold come suddenly, that will also be something of the past!
Birds, by the 100s eating the gosling crumbs and the oats giving to them by Barry, brings us great joy! The late baby swallows peep over the edge of their nest in the donkey house, always hungry and ready to be fed! Hope they make it before the winter come, they still have to leave the nest, put body weight on before they can fly to SA!!!that is another good 4 weeks or more!
The geese are like children, if you do not give attention they make sure we are aware of their existence. The noise is unreal! The teenagers cannot cackle yet but are on the way with an in between noise that can be heard for a mile! The 3 goslings are nearly a month old and will soon be introduced to the rest of the family! Prince Scruffie, keeps guard over Mary and the 3 goslings as if he gets paid to do it! He never leaves her side, he on that side of the fence and she on this side! They keep the grass short and that pleases Barry to no limits as he can omit cutting the lower field, it is a big job and he is not getting younger!
We have the Polish worker and his son who is visiting from Poland working on the extension of the shed, digging the holes for the railway sleepers, cementing them in and then the framework for the roof and the wooden fence poles as walls, it will be used for shelter for the geese and turf or wood for the winter. The older shed is just not big enough. The donkey house far too small for the geese family! 2 will be going to a friend maybe next week that leaves us with 8 young geese and 5 older ones.
We are very fortunate to be counted in at the church for the wood that will come available. The church grounds are surrounded by 60-100 year old pine trees and has grown far too high. The roots are disturbing the graves as well as the foundations of the church and has ruined the stone wall around the church, so, sad as it is, the trees have to come down! It is also a health and safety risk with high winds and storms.
At work things have improved a little after the ballot was accepted for 5% hours and pay cut instead of the less 18% we were working under for the last 2 years! Worked has picked up and means that we are now working 3+4nights in a fortnight and sometimes more, all overtime has to be paid and not given as time over!
There has also been an inquiry into the professional attitude of the Manager and Nursing Director of the Hospital who sometimes would use abusive language, raised voice and unreasonable expectations especially from the theatre staff. The woman, conducting the interviews have had experience with such disturbing behaviour in the EU and we hope sincerely that matters will improve!
Last but not least on the list are those who have received exam results and I am waiting to hear how it went with Christiaan’s leaving cert results! The SA children and students are nearing their last quarter of the year and we wish them well!
Here I am thinking of Nicole, Stephan, Nico, Elaine, Reuben, all still at school. Mieanka?, has returned to JHB and I hope she will be happy!
And off course all the students at University!
I am also thinking very specially of my friend Trish and hope sincerely that she will get this letter and know that she is always in my prayers!
Glad that Rob and Thilo are back in Saudi Safely and enjoyed their trip to the USA.
Arnolda and Garth in Australia and the big trek through the desert, enjoy the get-together with the sons!
Gerlof and Sandra are due home soon and I hope they have a safe journey back!
My friend Marthie is visiting her Mom and family in SA and I hope she enjoys every minute of it! I hope she left here with only hand luggage as the orders and requests from all of us were plentiful!!!!
Cilna looking forward to you next visit, a pity you could not come with this time!
Gerda, have not heard from you since you left but hope that you are keeping well! The rest of the SA friends I will hopefully see with our weekly coffee date sometime soon!
Birthdays! Martie R is having a birthday on the 26th, Rachelle had her birthday Yesterday and I hope that the New year will be full of wonderful surprises and good health! Rachelle’s mom has been visiting and will soon be going back, I sincerely hope that she enjoyed Ireland!
Thank you to all for the good wishes that appeared on face book ,sms(txt)and by emails! Much appreciated!
All the people not feeling so well and children that are sick, I hope you all feel better soon! Haya how are the feet and Cobus’s back?
This then, greetings from Cranleymore where we enjoy cool, no wind but sunny weather today!
Take care, all of you!
Regards from house to house

Ierse groete!
Saterdag 14 Aug’10

Greetings from the Emerald Island
Saturday 7 Aug ‘10
Good day to all, family and friends!
Met Eireann or something to that spelling promised that the heavens will open sometime today, no.... unfortunately not to let the sun in but with buckets, of rain water. Admitting that the sun did shine for 60 min when we got up this morning, it is now nearly dark inside and we have to switch the lights on to read or do something specific! According to records, I do not know who keep these records , they never consulted me, and I have records of everyday’s weather for the last 5 years, the sun shone less in July 2010 than in the last 10 Julys.
August has not started much better we are at day 7 and we have not had a full 12 hours sunshine yet in these 7 days! Summer is coming to an end and very quickly!
Vegetation flourish in the wet weather in some ways and in other they totally disintegrate, the 2 tomatoes plants standing in the rain but with leaves too dense the water does not reach the soil and in spite of all the rain we still have to water many plants and baskets!
In our garden we have one ornamental plum tree and one green plum tree entwined, or may be grafted, who will know but in the 5½ years we saw no fruit of any kind , but this year the branches are heavy with a different kind of plum , looks like cherry ,lovely red in colour when ripe and sweet! So with ladder and rake we intend to gather all the fruit from the highest branches to make jam!. These fruit is from the green tree, there are also fruit on the maroon tree but the fruit stays hard and also looks just like a cherry but tasting it , it is plum like!
The lower field was cut on Thursday and looks good, we do that only once or twice a year the geese does graze it down well but with all the rain it becomes like a forest!
Barry does most things himself and I assist just by being at his side. Last Saturday he wanted to sharpen a knife in the workshop and found the grinder not working, thought the plug fuse must be gone, { here all electrical appliances are equipped with a fuse in the plug, you just change the fuse } hoping to get back to it later but he did not! Coming back from church last Sunday he fetched food for the geese and find it smelling awful in the workshop ,looked around and saw the freezer defrosted and the whole place under water!
Quickly took the little bit left in the freezer out, still fairly frozen and moved it to the fridge in the house for cooking later, that day or Monday but then we realized that there is no electricity at all in the shed. With elementary knowledge of electricity and the DIY digest we went to the Shop and got a tester, after many hours of doing exactly as they suggest we established that all is not well and suddenly the whole house’s electricity went! After a hour I phoned ESB , wonderful, it was not the 2 of us causing it but the complete shut down over 10 -15km radius! What a relief!
A colleague of mine living 12 miles away is an electrician and he came round on our request and found that there is a break in the conduction from the house to the workshop! The cable being buried under 3ft cement for the last 5 years makes digging it up an impossibility! Typical Irish he will pitch here Monday or Tuesday afternoon with some very good excuse! He promised to be here today but the day is gone and no Cìaron......
In the mean time we also travelled to Dublin for the Nuclear Cardiac stress test which turned out to be more than a stress test for the heart but also in endurance and patience! What- ever could go wrong, did and after 50 min of lying with his arms above his head tied down in the scanning tunnel Barry went through agony as he has a shoulder held together with love and tender care as he tore most of his shoulder muscles some time ago! He also got panicky in the tunnel and vowed not to go back whatever the outcome. Lo and behold the phone rang Thursday, the cardiologist wants him back for a resting scan but he refused blankly he would have to lay for another 30 mins in the same position and he is just not able for it! That took care of the heart scanning! Disappointment but so it will be!
Last night after our evening meal i discovered that my face is covered in a red hot rash!and spreading fast over large part of my body It is still there and can get worse at any time or subside for a little while but not long! So here we go , the only thing I ate different from all week was Salmon last night and a little beetroot! I eat it at least 1x a week and never had a problem before but even the anti-histamine is not working! Will watch and see!
Our church minister is still on leave and Barry chose the Hymns like last Sunday, ones he can sing, then we know that the 10-12 people there will be able to sing it as well! All well known and well practised! Always the best day of the week!
I am not sure if I will post this letter as I suddenly wondered what on earth do you do with the letter? Delete it as it arrives in the ‘inbox’ most probably
The geese teenagers are lovely graceful young birds Monday 6 weeks old! The goslings a week old and all going according to plan!
I hope that those who are on holiday are having really a good time , those preparing for exams, study well! Those waiting for their results! Everything of the best!
Young Gerhard from Frikkie en Elmarie has a birthday on the 12th I will forward a separate birthday card!
Any-one else having a birthday Many happy returns of the day!
We were only 4 ladies drinking coffee on Friday and as always very pleasant! Marna I hope your cold has improved! Hope the other SA friends are keeping well! Gerda!!. How are you!?
Always lovely to hear from you, Trish I wonder if you get my letters, can you let me know!?
I greet ye all from Cranleymore where the sun plays hide and seeks with us!
Love and kind regards

Ierse groete!
Sondag 1 Aug’10

July greetings from Ireland
Saturday 24 July ‘10
Good day to all, family and friends!
Not much has changed since last week weather wise as it is dripping again today, light mist rain, but warm!
Yesterday was a very good day and we cannot complain!
The grass grows and the fields where the farmers had the hay cut stands already high with green green grass!
The flowers cannot take this amount of rain and looked like drowned specimens of some distant fauna and flora planted before the great flood!
The strawberries has come to an end after many weeks of producing excellent fruit!
The rasberries and black currants are starting to ripen and I will cook some jam ! The apples 7 in all, are still hanging and growing ,we are watching them like hawks!
The rhubarb is no more as our dear geese family tramples all over them with little respect! We will have to move them to a safer spot!
I have a busy week ahead of me, work wise, as every surgeon tries to get as much done before the hospital closes for the August maintenance week!
I will have 2 weeks off and would only then have used up my accumilated leave of last year!
Some 3 weeks ago I lost all the fillings out of 1 of my molars, I say ‘all’ as the Polish dentist just keeps on patching the broken parts. But this time it is not to be saved, and I have my appointment with a proper dentist. I have never had a tooth pulled , do not like the injection as I can feel and hear it so clearly in my head, wriggling between the roots of the teeth and against the jaw bone, but without it I will not make it so at 10am on Monday morning I will have my 1st tooth pulled since childhood!
I know of a young man that will be going for an interview this coming week, Christiaan I will be thinking of you and hope it will go well!
Gerlof and Sandra are already in SA and Arnolda & kie seems to be on their way to Perth and then driving to Melbourne! Some distance and we hope that you will enjoy it and that all will go well, When is your departure date?
Nine from Kokanje and her grand daughter ,Nine from Canada are also going on a trip,every-one seems to be on the move,we, on the other hand are staying put the livestock is keeping us from leaving for much longer than 12 hours!!!!
Last Sunday we had the privilegde of having Finbarr and family visiting and we just cannot get enough of our grandson Lukas! He was 3 months old yesterday! He is such a lovely child!
Birthdays for this coming week: Oubaas(Gerhard) in Mazibuku Zambia will be a year older on the 26th,Megan Josling and Thilo on the 27th and Frik on the 31st!
Many happy returns!!!! May it be a lovely memorable day for all of you! Thilo will be somewhere in the USA! Enjoy!
Some time later!
Just back from a pleasurable attendance to our local argricultural show! Charlie is the chairman and Charlie is a member of Corboy congregation. His parents, Sam and Mabel Murphy are part of the foundation of the church, Sam (83yr)and Victor(86yr) are brothers and they went to school in the hall next to the church and it is very important to them that we attend functions like the show. Victor is the president of the Argricultural Show in the Midlands! Sam’s grand daughter studied Forensic something and work in Leeds for the Court pertaining to drugs, any kind of drugs and she rides the horses and do show jumping and we have since we attended the church made an effort to watch her jump and she was jumping today, we were just too late to see her but the show jumping is really lovely, these horses are so big and the jumps so high your heart nearly stops every time they go over an obstacle.
We bought every possible thing with apple and raisons in it! Our evening meal will consists of the ‘brack’ , a fruit loaf, we bought at the Rectory which had a sale for the Boy scouts this morning and apple strudle and raison bread! A little piece of everything!
The animals were beautiful, cows with calfs, bulls, sheep, goats. We should have had Madam and her 7 goslings there but ....we will arrange something for next year. There were enough chickens! Small and large and ducks of all kinds and colours! This is really a rural country show! Undescribable! You have to attend to appreciate it!
Tomorrow is Sunday the best day of the week and Stephen our Minister is back, Last week was somewhat of a disaster. The man who came, first used a book out of another ‘Bible’ He called it the ‘Good News Bible’ I was not so sure about it but the books name is Judith!
I do remember that when Finbarr had to attend his cathecism classes I had to buy a different Bible with 5 extra books in it and I think that was the Bible he was using which meant that no one could follow the reading , That was enough to upset the older generation and then he did not use the microphone and those with impaired hearing were totally left out and that is not on! We could rather have sung 20 Hymns for the 40 min!!!!! The lesson in itself was good but I wonder who heard it!
Stephen will surely hear about it tomorrow!
We go to church for fellowship and to hear the Word of the Lord explained and prayer but when you upset these Irish that are absolutely set in their ways it leaves little harmony although they stayed very polite! The month of August is Stephen’s holiday month and we are then entertained by 4 different preachers I sincerely hope that it will go better!
Those you are not interested in the Goose saga exit now!
The goslings are growing so fast, like mushrooms! By the hour! They are back in their own quarters and settled without problems. Wednesday morning when Barry opened the door and checked on the other 2 hens sitting on the eggs he found all the eggs in the nest of Naomi out of the nest, He could not understand it and put them all neatly back, but later in the day he checked again and she was standing at the back of the nest not sitting at all! He thought that she might like to go out and opened the partitions. Both of them went out but when they came back Mary went to sit on her eggs and Naomi also settle with her on the same nest. It was a catastrophy and we had to get her our of Mary’s nest back into her own!. A hour later we noticed that she is not sitting on the nest but standing at the back. It was now late in the day and Barry decided that he will leave it till the morning! The next morning she flew out of the nest with an egg broken! That was when we realised that she must have realised there is no life in the eggs and abandoned them. 9 eggs lost! Some just plain rotten and others never developed! Very sad! Mary is still sitting and we hold thumbs that she will make it to the end!
The goslings have now started to develop feathers and it is so wonderful to be so near to this process of growth and development! They are a bit top heavy and their tailends are pulling them down which looks very funny, but they are correcting themselves and eventually get it right !!!!
They graze now as a group, Madam, as mother Scruffie who received a few blows agains his heads when he pecks the little ones, Ruthie who lost her chicks some time ago and Naomi the last hen to loose her brood!
Looking after this lot is a fulltime job! We make notes of all the growth points and hope to properly record it for the future! Behaviour as well as problems encountered!
These birds are very strong and trying to move one of them out of a nest is no joke and another time she just flew over the fence wihtout a problem, past Barry and his stick!
The next episode in story will follow soon!
The day turned out to be wonderful! The mist were replaced by bright ,warm stinging sun shine, blue skies and some cloud but brilliant over all! 22 degrees!!!!!!!!!!
The bird population have suddenly increased triple fold and at certain times we could easily have 40 little birds on the wall outside the kitchen! Very lovely!
The Tour de France is coming to an end tomorrow and we will miss it! We followed the entire race with great interest! Headbutting and all!
The whole cabinet is on 2months holiday and all the important reports which should have received their attention have been published and they are shying away from the responsibilities brought to the front through the reports, by shining in their absence!
Parents who are arranging weddings, enjoy it ! Those who have to study, DO IT WELL! Those who are expecting, stay well! Those who are sick, or not able to move as fast as they are used to, get well quickly! Haya I am thinking of you!
I greet ye all from a lovely sunny afternoon in Cranley more!
Barry and Christina
